At the 2024 International Emmy Awards held in New York City on November 25, India’s The Night Manager fell short in the race for Best Drama Series. The award went to France’s Les Gouttes de Dieu (Drops of God), a show celebrated for its unique premise and engaging storytelling.
Les Gouttes de Dieu, streaming on Apple TV+, follows the story of a woman who inherits her late father's extraordinary wine collection. To claim the inheritance, she must compete against her father’s protégé in a series of rigorous wine-related challenges. The gripping narrative, coupled with its high production value, earned the French series the coveted honor.
Meanwhile, The Night Manager, an Indian adaptation of the acclaimed British series of the same name, was India’s sole representation at the International Emmys this year. Directed by Sandeep Modi, the series tells the story of a former Indian Navy Lieutenant, played by Aditya Roy Kapur, who infiltrates the world of an arms dealer, portrayed by Anil Kapoor, to dismantle his empire. The show also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Tillotama Shome, Saswata Chatterjee, and Ravi Behl in pivotal roles.
Released in two parts in 2023, the first installment of The Night Manager premiered in February, with the second following in June. While the series was well-received domestically and gained international attention, it faced stiff competition in the Best Drama Series category. Other contenders included Australia’s The Newsreader – Season 2 and Argentina’s Iosi, El Espia Arrepentido – Season 2 (Yosi, the Regretful Spy).
The original British adaptation of The Night Manager had won multiple prestigious awards, including three Golden Globes and two Primetime Emmys. While the Indian version did not replicate this success at the International Emmys, its nomination itself is a significant milestone for Indian streaming content on the global stage.
The victory of Les Gouttes de Dieu underscores the growing appreciation for diverse narratives in the international entertainment landscape. The French series' compelling storytelling and innovative concept made it a standout contender among an impressive lineup of global dramas.
Though The Night Manager did not bring home the award, its recognition at the International Emmys is a testament to the evolving quality of Indian content. It highlights the potential of Indian creators to compete on a global platform and paves the way for more such projects to gain international acclaim in the future.
