In a disturbing case that has sparked outrage across the nation, Delhi Police have arrested three men for the alleged gang rape of a 34-year-old woman near the ITO area in New Delhi. The incident, which occurred on October 11, involved two men who allegedly spotted the woman alone and decided to exploit her vulnerability. An autorickshaw driver later joined the attack and then abandoned the victim in the Sarai Kale Khan area.
According to police sources, the woman, who suffers from a mental health condition, was approached by the suspects while she was alone. Two of the accused, identified as Pramod Babu (32), a scrap dealer, and Mohammed Shamshul (29), a beggar, were reportedly intoxicated at the time and saw the woman as an “easy target.” They allegedly dragged her to an isolated spot and assaulted her. During the attack, an autorickshaw driver, Prabhu Mahto (28), witnessed the assault and proceeded to join in. Mahto reportedly forced the woman into his vehicle, sexually assaulted her, and later abandoned her in Sarai Kale Khan.
The incident came to light when a passerby noticed the woman, visibly injured, walking in the Sarai Kale Khan area and contacted police. A team promptly arrived, and the woman was taken to a hospital, where medical examinations confirmed the assault. Currently, the woman remains under treatment at a government hospital in Delhi.
Delhi Police initiated an extensive investigation, utilizing CCTV footage, technical surveillance, and information from local networks to track down the suspects. The autorickshaw used in the crime has been seized, and crucial physical evidence, including blood-stained clothing, was recovered. Visual evidence from CCTV cameras has also bolstered the case, providing key insights into the incident.
Senior police officials highlighted the coordinated efforts that led to the arrests, noting that the suspects were apprehended after identifying the autorickshaw used in the attack. The police confirmed that all three men have been detained and are facing charges of gang rape and criminal intimidation under relevant sections of the law.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has strongly condemned the incident, calling for stringent action against the accused and expressing concern over the safety of women in the city. DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal stated, “This horrific crime underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms to protect women and hold perpetrators accountable without delay.”
As the investigation progresses, Delhi Police have assured the public of a thorough examination of all evidence to build a robust case. The nation remains outraged, calling for swift justice to prevent such incidents in the future.
