New Delhi: A team from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) faced a violent attack while conducting raids linked to a cybercrime investigation in the Bijwasan area of the national capital on Thursday. An assistant director-level officer of the central agency sustained injuries during the assault.

The raids were part of an operation by the ED's High-Intensity Unit (HIU), targeting prominent chartered accountants allegedly associated with a sprawling cybercrime network. The agency stated that its investigation uncovered the laundering of illicit funds generated from thousands of cybercrimes, including phishing scams, QR code fraud, and fraudulent part-time job offers.

"Today’s searches were aimed at dismantling the financial networks enabling these cybercrimes that have victimized individuals across the country," the ED stated in an official release.

During the operation, the team encountered resistance from five individuals at the raided premises, including Ashok Sharma, a chartered accountant, and his brother. The group allegedly assaulted the officers, leaving one seriously injured. According to officials, one suspect fled the scene, and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend them.

In response to the attack, the ED filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused. The charges include obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties, assaulting government officials, and other relevant sections of the law.

The injured officer received immediate medical attention and is reported to be in stable condition. The ED has assured that such incidents will not deter its commitment to pursuing those involved in financial crimes and cyber fraud.

This attack follows several high-profile raids conducted by the ED to combat cybercrime networks exploiting digital platforms to defraud unsuspecting victims. The agency has emphasized the need for enhanced security protocols for its officers during operations.

Officials from the ED have reiterated their resolve to take stringent action against those attempting to obstruct the legal process. The local police are collaborating with the ED to investigate the incident and ensure the arrest of all involved parties.

The incident highlights the risks faced by law enforcement officers in combating complex financial and cybercrimes. Authorities have called for greater public cooperation to enable seamless execution of legal operations and maintain the rule of law.
