MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently clarified that Eknath Shinde, Shiv Sena leader and former Chief Minister, had agreed to join the government during their initial discussions, dispelling claims that Shinde’s decision was a last-minute development. The statement comes amid intense deliberations over the formation of the new Mahayuti government, following the alliance's resounding victory in the state assembly elections.
Fadnavis, in a series of interviews, emphasized that Shinde’s early commitment to the alliance was based on mutual understanding and shared political vision. "When I met Shinde, he had already agreed to be part of the government. This decision wasn’t sudden or made under pressure," Fadnavis said, underlining the seamless transition of leadership within the alliance.
Reflecting on Shinde’s significant role in the 2022 political upheaval, Fadnavis credited him for taking substantial risks during his rebellion against the then Maha Vikas Aghadi government. “Shinde’s decision could have ended his political career. I proposed to my party that he be made Chief Minister, recognizing his courage and determination. It wasn’t an easy decision, but the party eventually supported it,” Fadnavis noted.
The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance, along with Ajit Pawar’s faction of the NCP, has been finalizing the cabinet formation and distribution of portfolios. Fadnavis confirmed that the Mahayuti government will maintain a balance of experienced and fresh faces in the cabinet, with the expansion scheduled before December 16. "Our numbers are nearly finalized, and we’ve initiated discussions on portfolio distribution,” he added.
Addressing concerns about the government’s financial stability due to welfare schemes, Fadnavis reassured that Maharashtra’s debt-to-GDP ratio, currently at 17-18%, will stabilize within two to three years. He highlighted the administration’s focus on development initiatives, including the redevelopment of BDD chawls and Dharavi, alongside affordable housing projects aimed at benefiting the Marathi Manoos.
Fadnavis also acknowledged the pro-incumbency sentiment bolstered by the government’s welfare initiatives, attributing the alliance’s victory to these efforts. “The people of Maharashtra have shown trust in our leadership. Welfare schemes like Ladki Bahin have benefited all communities, and this inclusive approach has resonated with voters,” he remarked.
As discussions within the Mahayuti alliance progress, Fadnavis’s remarks aim to project unity and a clear direction for the government, ensuring a collaborative approach to Maharashtra’s governance.
