From peaceful mountain to violent strikes : Ladakh on boil

Ladakh located between Karakoram Range in the north and the Himalayas and one of the union territories of India and often know as the “Land of high passes”is both beautiful and strategically important .

But on September 24 the strike in Ladakh highlighted the tension over the demand of statehood and constitutional safeguard . The strike in the start was peaceful but then it turned really violet in Leh which caused the death of 4 people and left many people injured .

The reason of this disaster is not new since 2019 when Ladakh became an union territory the absence of a legislative assembly has left people feeling voiceless.The main group which were supporting this protest were the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, who want Ladakh to get its own legislature.

Sonam wangchuk ended his hunger strike because the strike meant to highlight these issues peacefully, but violence has put the movement in a difficult spot. On October 6 the central government has agreed to meet the ladakhi leaders. The coming dialogue will be crucial in shaping its future.
