The Reality of Slum Life in Delhi

India's honorable capital, Delhi, a city where the country's richest of the rich politicians reside, a city which is the face of India, a city which is a dream of many, but to a surprise, it is also the worst nightmare of the people living in the slums of Delhi. The slums of Delhi portray a dark grey side of India's reality. They showcase a stark contrast, leaving most of the population in shock. Out of the 17 SDG's of the UN General Assembly, the top few are: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Clean Water & Sanitation. But is it really possible to achieve these goals in India by 2030 by taking into account the current situation of Delhi slums? The answer would be quite difficult.

Challenges Faced by Residents

Challenges and Problems have become an inevitable part of the residents, residing in Delhi's slum areas. They day-to-day encounter very poor sanitation, caused by water contamination, open potholes, working as a breeding ground for various mosquitoes and insects. They live in kachha houses, also called as Jhuggis, which are often damaged by heavy rainfall. They neither have access to clean drinking water facilities nor to clean defecation facilities. Women living in slum areas face a lot of health issues as they don't get a clean environment during their menstrual cycle. Coming to children, no nearby schools or colleges are available. They require to walk miles and miles to get to their schools. Parents cannot afford private schools due to their high fee structure, only sending their children to government owned schools and institutions.

Irony of the Situation

Amongst all the chaos and the problems, the irony of this dark reality is that various big political leaders have done their campaigns in these huge slums. Stark reality is that no significant changes have been made since a decade but all the political campaigns do reach these slums quite effectively. Manipulation has always been a easy game for the political leaders and when it comes to manipulating the poor, it is a left hand game for them. But the real question is, would this ever end? Who'll put an end to this situation? Who would be responsible to bring a positive change? Delhi's slums reality can be portrayed as a place where an election campaign can reach easily but not the basic cleanliness facilities.

Community and Opportunity

Life in the slums of Delhi is quite challenging, but with a sense of shared experience of the community, it is easy to navigate through the problems. Residents usually form social networks, offering great emotional and instrumental aid to each other. There are also many NGOs working in these areas, by providing them free educational classes, medical care and vocational training, equipping the locals with the knowledge to enhance their conditions. Through nurturing hope and opportunity, these efforts have a critical role in improving the lives of those residing in slum communities.
