In a tragic and shocking case, Aliya Fakhri, sister of Bollywood actress Nargis Fakhri, has been indicted on multiple charges, including first-degree murder and arson, for allegedly setting a deadly fire that claimed the lives of her ex-boyfriend and his female friend. The incident occurred on November 2 in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York City.
According to investigators, Aliya, 43, arrived at a detached garage around 6:20 a.m., where her ex-partner Edward Jacobs, 35, and his friend Anastasia Ettienne, 33, were present. Witnesses reported hearing Aliya scream, "You’re all going to die today," before igniting a fire at the entrance of the building. The blaze quickly turned into an inferno, leaving the victims trapped with no means of escape. They succumbed to smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, as confirmed by the Queens district attorney’s office.
Prosecutors allege that Aliya deliberately set the fire following a prolonged period of distress over her breakup with Jacobs, who had ended their relationship a year earlier. Despite Jacobs' clear rejections, Aliya reportedly attempted to rekindle the relationship, as stated by his mother, Janet. “She wasn’t accepting the rejection,” Janet told the New York Post.
The victims’ relationship was described as purely platonic. Prosecutors revealed that Anastasia, upon discovering the fire, attempted to save Jacobs, who was asleep upstairs, but tragically perished alongside him.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz condemned the act, stating, “Aliya Fakhri maliciously ended the lives of two people in an act of sheer rage. The charges reflect the severity of her actions, and we will ensure justice is served.”
Aliya Fakhri faces a slew of charges, including four counts of first-degree murder, four counts of second-degree murder, and arson. If convicted of the most serious charges, she could face life imprisonment. She is scheduled to appear in court on December 9.
Aliya’s mother has come forward, expressing disbelief at her daughter’s alleged actions and attributing her behavior to struggles with opioid addiction. “She was always a caring person, trying to help everyone,” she said.
The case has drawn significant public attention, not only due to Aliya’s family ties to the entertainment industry but also for the horrific nature of the crime. As the trial approaches, the focus remains on securing justice for the victims and their grieving families.
