Introduction

U.S. President Donald Trump has made some allegations against the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) these days, putting figures that the American agency has funds for influencing Indian elections' voter turnout. Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) here in Washington, D.C., President Trump challenged the need for spending such money, saying, "18 million dollars for helping India with its elections. Why the hell? Why don't we just go to old paper ballots, and let them help us with their elections, right? Voter ID. Wouldn't that be nice? We're giving money to India for elections. They don't need money."

Such utterances spark a political debate in India, where political parties like the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress have been trading charges on foreign funding. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera demanded the Prime Minister give an explanation referring to Trump's statement: "This money is sent to Modi to influence elections. Since we are asking all the time about voter turnout trends, is it due to foreign funds?"

And there have been reports disproving President Trump's claims. The Indian Express reported that the $21 million narrative concerned Bangladesh and not India in Kenya, to fund political and civic engagement initiatives to boost the participation of students in their January 2024 elections.

In response to this uproar, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar noted that though there was nothing reported on the issue, he stated, "the government is looking at it." "If USAID operates in India assuming it is carrying out good faith activities, one would be concerned if there were deviations," he said.

Thus while the matter progresses, it also matters to check the veracity of these claims before blowing it out of proportion to engage in creating discordant notes and ultimately suffering in embarrassing situations during foreign public relations. A transparent all-around dialogue is, therefore, encouraged between the two concerned nations on all specific issues.
