The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has officially called off its protest in Islamabad, which commenced on November 24, citing an intensified government crackdown on demonstrators. The decision was confirmed on November 27, 2024, through a press release issued by the party's media cell.
The protests were originally organized to demand the release of PTI founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been in jail since August 2023 on charges his supporters claim are politically motivated. Thousands of PTI supporters gathered in Islamabad’s Red Zone, an area that houses critical government buildings, to show solidarity with Khan.
However, the demonstrations escalated into violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement. The crackdown by security forces resulted in at least six deaths, including four security personnel, and numerous injuries. Law enforcement agencies conducted an operation to disperse the crowds from the Red Zone, leading to mass arrests and the use of force to maintain order.
During the operation, prominent PTI figures, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, reportedly left the protest site. Bushra Bibi, who has recently taken a more active role in the party’s affairs, has become a significant figure in the movement supporting Khan.
In a statement, the PTI condemned the government’s actions, describing the operation as an act of “brutality” aimed at turning Islamabad into a “slaughterhouse for unarmed citizens.” The party announced the suspension of its peaceful protest temporarily, adding that its future course of action would be decided under the guidance of Imran Khan.
The government has defended its actions, citing the need to maintain law and order in the capital. Officials have emphasized that any attempts to disrupt peace or damage public property will be dealt with strictly.
The cancellation of the protest marks a significant moment in Pakistan’s ongoing political turmoil, with the PTI and its supporters regrouping to plan their next move. The situation remains tense, with both sides locked in a power struggle that continues to polarize the nation.
As Pakistan navigates this turbulent phase, all eyes are on the PTI's next steps and the government’s response to mounting political pressures. The coming days are expected to be crucial in shaping the country’s political landscape.
