Legendary choreographer Saroj Khan, often celebrated as one of Bollywood’s finest, choreographed over 2,000 iconic dance numbers during her career. Known for her collaborations with stars like Madhuri Dixit on unforgettable songs like Choli Ke Peeche and Ek Do Teen, Khan was a formidable figure in the industry. Yet, while her artistic influence is unmatched, she was also known for her strict and, at times, abrasive approach on set—a style that many didn’t fully understand.

In a recent interview on a podcast with Bharti Singh and Harsh Limbachiya, fellow choreographer Terrence Lewis offered insight into Khan’s often misunderstood behavior. Lewis highlighted the challenging dynamics faced by women in Bollywood, especially in the past, when the industry was even more male-dominated. “People who questioned, ‘Why does she abuse or behave so rudely?’ need to understand it’s extremely difficult for women to work in this industry dominated by men,” Lewis explained. “They have to be rough and strong. The ruthlessness of the industry kills the softness in them. They have to turn into men to survive.”

Khan’s assertive personality, Lewis explained, was a means of self-protection and a way to command respect. Unlike male choreographers, female professionals often felt the need to be more assertive to ensure they were taken seriously. “I don’t know if you have noticed, but the male choreographers are comparatively calmer than the female ones,” Lewis continued. “Female choreographers often come across as more abusive…because they have to prove it time and again that ‘Hey, don’t take me lightly, or I will make you regret it.’”

Reflecting on the industry’s structure, Lewis expressed that women in Bollywood often have to mask their natural personalities to navigate the pressures of a competitive environment. “As men, we don’t have to do this as much. But in a male-dominated industry, women have to toughen up to survive,” he said, adding, “People end up suppressing the softer side of themselves, adopting a manner that’s more commanding.”

Saroj Khan, who passed away in July 2020 at the age of 71, continues to be remembered for her unparalleled contributions to Hindi cinema. While her methods were sometimes harsh, her legacy as a mentor and an icon remains undiminished. The discipline she instilled in her dancers set standards that elevated Bollywood choreography, creating a path for future generations of choreographers. As Lewis’s reflections reveal, Khan’s strength was not only in her art but in her resilience, standing firm in an industry where she had to fight for her place. Her life serves as a powerful reminder of the challenges women face in pursuing excellence amidst gendered expectations.
