Tom Homan, appointed by President-elect Donald Trump as the new "border czar," has laid out a robust deportation strategy aimed at tackling what he calls a "historic immigration crisis." Homan, a former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), emphasized his firm stance during a recent interview, highlighting a stark contrast to the policies of the Biden administration.

Mass Deportation Operation Planned

Homan’s plan includes prioritizing the deportation of illegal immigrants who have criminal records, pose national security threats, or have defied removal orders. “Millions of people entered this country illegally, which is a crime,” he stated, underscoring the need for decisive action. Homan’s strategy also focuses on individuals flagged on the federal Terrorist Watch List, further framing illegal immigration as a national security concern.

“The country needs a mass deportation operation,” Homan asserted, defending the necessity of large-scale removals amid a record number of illegal border crossings during the Biden administration, estimated at over 14 million.

Contrast with Biden Administration’s Policies

Homan’s approach signals a stark departure from the strategies employed by Vice President Kamala Harris, who led the Biden administration’s border policies. While Harris emphasized border security and argued against immediate intervention, critics point to record-breaking crossings and limited enforcement measures.

Homan dismissed claims that asylum seekers largely qualify for protection, citing data showing that 90% of applicants are denied by immigration judges due to inadequate claims.

Military and Intelligence Support

In a move to bolster ICE and Border Patrol efforts, Homan confirmed the involvement of the U.S. military in non-enforcement roles. The military will provide logistical support, including air and ground transportation, construction assistance, and intelligence operations, but arrests will remain the jurisdiction of law enforcement agencies.

“The military has supported border enforcement under various administrations, and we will expand this support,” Homan explained, stressing the collaboration between the Department of Defense and other federal agencies.

Encouraging Voluntary Departures

Homan urged undocumented individuals to leave the country voluntarily, highlighting the benefits of avoiding formal removal orders, which often come with severe penalties, including a 20-year reentry ban. “If you’re here illegally, now is the time to leave,” he advised.

With his firm rhetoric and detailed strategy, Homan signaled the Trump administration's commitment to stricter immigration enforcement. "You better start packing now because you are going home," he declared, setting the tone for what many anticipate will be an intense policy shift in 2024.

This hardline approach is expected to face significant legal challenges and public debate, underscoring the complexity of the immigration issue in the U.S.
