DEHRADUN: A night of celebration took a devastating turn on Thursday when a high-speed SUV crash claimed the lives of six friends in Dehradun. The accident occurred near Sahastradhara Road, leaving the local community in shock.
The victims, identified as Aman Khurana, Riya Sharma, Mehak Arora, Siddharth Bhatia, Ankit Verma, and Priya Singh, were returning from a party hosted by Aman. Their SUV collided with a stationary truck near a sharp turn, overturning on impact. The collision's intensity was so severe that the vehicle's sunroof tore apart, and the SUV was left mangled beyond recognition.
According to the Cantt Police, initial investigations suggest excessive speed as the primary cause of the crash. Inspector K.C. Bhatt stated, “CCTV footage shows the SUV moving at moderate speed initially but accelerating sharply before losing control. The truck was stationary, and there is no indication of fault on its part.”
Eyewitnesses recounted that the SUV was recklessly overtaking other vehicles moments before the accident. A nearby shopkeeper noted, “I saw the car swerving dangerously. It seemed like they were in a hurry.”
The tragedy has also drawn attention to the risks of late-night driving and negligent behavior on Dehradun’s hilly roads. Experts have pointed out that the sharp curves and poor visibility on certain stretches require extra caution, especially at night.
The sole survivor of the accident, Aditya Malhotra, is currently hospitalized in stable condition but remains unable to provide details of the incident due to trauma. Police are awaiting his statement to piece together the final moments leading up to the collision.
The group, all in their early twenties, had shared pictures from their party on social media just hours before the accident. Family members of the victims are grappling with the loss, with one parent saying, “It’s an unimaginable tragedy. They were full of life and had so much ahead of them.”
The accident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic rules in the region. Authorities have urged residents to prioritize safety, especially during nighttime travel.
As Dehradun mourns the loss of these young lives, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of reckless driving, turning what should have been a night of joy into an irreversible tragedy.
